Malygos – Boss Strategy Guide

Malygos the Spellweaver is located in The Eye of Eternity and is the final boss of the Tier 7 content of World of Warcraft. To engage him, one player in the raid must have the [Heroic Key to the Focusing Iris], a drop from Sapphiron in Naxxaramas.

Malygos

  • 19,523,000 HP
  • Berserk – Malygos berserks after being engaged for 10 minutes, increasing all damage done in the encounter by 500%.
  • Arcane Breath – Frontal AoE cone dealing 30,000 damage to everyone within 40 yards in front of Malygos. The breath also applies a debuff and after 5 seconds, any player hit by the breath will explode, dealing 20,000 damage to all nearby allies. Malygos uses his breath every 15 seconds.
  • Arcane Storm – Every 10 seconds, Malygos will randomly turn to the raid and fire arcane missiles at 10 players at random.
  • Vortex – Every minute, Malygos will fly to the center of the platform. All raid members will be thrown into the air and spun around him for 10 seconds, taking 2000 damage per second (for a total of 20,000 damage total). Only instant cast spells are allowed during this time to keep everyone alive.
  • Power Spark - Every 20-30 seconds, Malygos will spawn a power spark, which if killed, leaves an aura on the ground, increasing damage dealt by players standing in it by 50%. If the spark reaches Malygos, it will increase his damage by 50% for 10 seconds, which allows him to one-shot the tank with his breath.

Strategy

Phase 1

Positioning

The main tank should position Malygos facing North, while the  raid stands behind Malygos at the south. The sparks spawn randomly at any of the 4 spawn points (NE, NW, SE, and SW).

Healing

Assign four to five healers to main tank healing while Malygos is on the ground. Malygos’ breath can one shot a tank if not topped off. All other healers should heal the raid through Arcane Storm volley.

During Vortex, all priests and druids should use their AoE heal abilities to keep the raid up.

Dealing with Power Sparks

Power Sparks spawn in the sky at one of the four marked spawn points, at NE, NW, SE, or SW. They fly directly towards Malygos and aggro does not work to “distract” them from their goal. Their flight time is approximately 30 seconds.

As a Power Spark heads towards Malygos, death knights in the raid should make note of its position and be ready to Death Grip it. Power Sparks cannot be Taunted, but Death Grip *will* pull them to the death knight before they can resume their path towards Malygos. Once the Power Spark is in range, the death knight should Death Grip the Power Spark to the raid and a paladin should immediately use Hammer of Justice to stun the Power Spark. This gives the raid enough time to kill the Power Spark, creating the beneficial power aura (lasting 60 seconds) on the ground underneath the players.

It is very useful, if possible, to kill Power Sparks in the same location as the previous Power Spark died. This creates a double stack of the power aura, increasing player damage by a total of 125%. This is a major DPS buff and makes the third phase of the fight much easier because of Malygos’ strict berserk timer.

Dealing with Vortex

Every minute, Malygos will cast Vortex, which pulls all players in and spins them around, dealing 20,000 damage to everyone. While flying around in Vortex, you can “turn” your character by looking at the arrow on your minimap. All players should face North, except the main tank who should face South. When Vortex ends, move immediately back to your position.

Phase 2 – Adds

When Malygos reaches 50%, he goes up in to the air and spawns many enemies to fight you.

Nexus Lord (Health:  567,000) – Four land on the ground and need to be tanked. They hit reasonably hard and also cast Arcane Shock on the tank, dealing 15k damage. Each time a Nexus Lord dies, a Hoverdisk will fall to the ground. Melee classes can ride these disks by right-clicking them, allowing to DPS the Scions of Eternity floating around the room.

Scion of Eternity (Health: 300,000) – Flying add that rotates around the room. They randomly shoot Arcane Barrage at players on the ground that deal 18,000 damage to players outside of the Anti Magic Shell.

Malygos – During this phase, Malygos will drop Anti Magic Shells to the ground that reduce magic damage to players inside by 50%. The shells shrink over time, so players should move to each new shell as soon as it is dropped to the platform. He will also cast Deep Breath, which steals 4,000 damage a second to anyone outside of an Anti Magic Shell.

Once all adds are dead, phase 2 ends and phase 3 begins.

Phase 3 – Control Dragons

At the beginning of phase 3, Malygos will break the platform you are standing on and you will fall, landing on Wyrmrest Skytalons.

The Wyrmest Skytalon has 100,000 hp and the following abilities:

  • Flame Spike – 10 Energy. This deals 1000 damage to Malygos and gives you one combo point on him.
  • Engulf in Flames – 50 Energy. This finisher puts a stacking fire DoT on Malygos. It lasts longer per combo point. Your goal is to use your combo points to stack this buff as high as possible as fast as you can for massive damage on Malygos. High stacks of this ability are the key to killing Malygos before he hits his Berserk timer.
  • Revivify – 10 Energy. This is a dragon Lifebloom, healing for 500 per second and giving you a healing combo point on your target. It lasts 10 seconds.
  • Life Burst – 50 Energy. This finisher heals your target and every drake near it for 2500+2500 per combo point, for a maximum of 15 000 healing done if you have 5 healing combo points. It also gives you a buff that increases your healing done by 50% for 5 seconds per combo point.
  • Flame Shield – 25 Energy. This is a finisher that burns your combo points on any target to give you a shield that reduces incoming damage by 80%. You use this ability when Malygos is about to cast Surge of Power on you to keep your drake from dying.
  • Blazing Speed – This is a “sprint” effect that lets your dragon move 500% faster to get out of Static Fields or back in range of your healers.

Malygos has 2 abilities during this phase:

  • Surge of Power This deals 72 000 damage over the course of 3 seconds, at 12 000 damage per “tick” of each half second. It targets three players at once in heroic mode, but only one player in normal mode. Those targetted should use their combo points to cast Flame Shield, defending themselves and reducing the damage by 80%.
  • Static Field This creates a huge ball of electric power in the air that deals around 10 000 damage per tick to any drake floating in it. Players need to look out for these and move away as fast as possible. They are larger than they appear, so make sure to move far from the field to avoid dying.

Strategy

In this phase, all players should try and stack their Engulf in Flame as high as possible by using Flame Spike to build 3-4 combo points, while also watching for when Malygos casts Surge of Power on them. When you see the message “Malygos focuses his energy on you”, you should immediately cast the Flame Shield (button 5). Follow the flame shield by refreshing your Engulf in Flame (button 2), then heal yourself (buttons 3 and 4) if needed.

Tips:

  • Put curse of elements on Malygos at the end of Phase 2 to increase all dragon damage by 10%!
  • Make sure to untarget and retarget Malygos after Phase 2 or else you won’t be able to use your shield!
