WoW zones in real life

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Fan stuff , Virtual selves , Odds and ends , Blizzard , Expansions , Screenshots , Wrath of the Lich King Aurdon over at I Sheep Things spotted this great collection of comparisons between real-life environs and the in-game places that they inspired. Not all of the comparisons are pitch-perfect, obviously (there are no Nagrand-esque floating islands in the real world, and the Crystalsong Forest picture shows trees covered in ice rather than the mystical wood that grows in-game), but lots of the pictures are really dead-on, and they show you really well how Blizzard uses a kind of hyper-realized version of Earth to create what seems like a very real Azeroth. We’ve posted before how the architecture of WoW mirrors real-world places and culture , but even the natural world of Azeroth uses lots of Earth’s real-life elements. And it would be cool to know where these pictures actually come from — some of them are recognizable (obviously, Stranglethorn Vale is based on parts of the Amazon, and The Barrens represents Africa’s savannahs), but even Icecrown and Zangarmarsh are represented (in slightly less mythical form) on Earth. It would be interesting to know exactly where. WoW zones in real life originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 18:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . PETA event: Seals got clubbed, pigs got eaten

Filed under: Horde , Alliance , Cooking , Analysis / Opinion , Events , Fan stuff , Blizzard , Humor On the podcast last Saturday, our friend NinthBatter (maker of the WI Song’s machinima ) gave us an on-scene report from the PETA event that took place earlier in the day. As you might expect, it was chaos — while PETA’s plan was to roll Alliance and attack a few Horde bad guys, lots of folks rolled Horde instead, and started up a guild called the “Seal Cub Clubbing Club.” Many, many seals died, as you can see in the few pictures below. And perhaps most hilariously, people brought plenty of Great Feasts to lay out for the crowd, which means that right in all of the (supposedly) animal-saving action, there was plenty of roast pig to eat. Not exactly the best day for PETA, but what did they expect? They did, however, get quite a few media mentions , so it was probably mission accomplished over there anyway. Did you go to the event? If you’ve got more pictures of what happened, or even some video of what went down, let us know and we’ll add them to the gallery below. Spiritual Guidance: Shadow as a secondary spec in 3.1

Filed under: Priest , Analysis / Opinion , (Priest) Spiritual Guidance Every week, Spiritual Guidance will offer practical insight for priests of the holy profession. Your host today is Alex Ziebart who doesn’t have as many cool links to plug up here as Matticus does but will try anyway . This week we get our Shadowform on.. Dual specs are coming, probably only a week away, and I suspect that many Holy and/or Discipline Priests out there will be picking up a Shadow build as their second spec. Priests , like most classes, can have many little build variations to fit your playstyle: Raiding, soloing, doing Battlegrounds, doing arenas, all of that. I’m going to look at a couple of good PvE specs to use in patch 3.1 , but unfortunately avoiding the PvP specs for you arena junkies in our audience. Trust me, you don’t want to take my advice there. Discipline PvP maybe , but not Shadow. PvE Shadow – Raiding MMO-Champion has a great tool for setting up talent specs, because you can include your glyphs as well, so we’re going to be using that. This spec (14/0/57) will be a fairly cookie-cutter raiding build in patch 3.1, with only very minor variations from person to person. The Shadow tree isn’t a very complicated one. Either a talent boosts your DPS, or it does something else. For a raiding spec, you want all of the DPS talents and you can skip all of the ‘something else’ talents unless they’re mandatory for a DPS talent. It’s pretty straightforward. Even in the Discipline tree the ultimate goal is to pick up the DPS talents, Twin Disciplines and Improved Inner Fire . Meditation isn’t a direct DPS talent, but having no mana is certainly a DPS hit. Matt on Massively

Darren, that community PR guy for My Game Mug managed to rope me in a quick interview. It’s the same group that’s developed WoW Headhunter . Be careful! That guy’s as sly as a Rogue. The interview on Massively involved both myself and Kree . We both chatted with Darren about what we looked for in candidates as guild leaders, recommendations for what new applicants can do and how important personality is. And then there’s the shameless praising of WoW Headhunter (naturally). Some quips: What are the top 3 things that you as a guild leaders look for in order to recruit the best candidates for your guild? (Answered by Matt) Attendance – Are the people we are recruiting going to be able to make the majority of the raids? While it’d be awesome to pickup a really good player, if he or she can only do 1 or 2 raids per month, they’re kind of useless to me and the rest of the guild since they’re never actually there. Knowledge – Often times, knowledge translates to in-game skill. I need to know how you play your role with your given class and spec, things like, when do you end up using your spells and if you use them in the most opportune times. Personality and Attitude – WoW has a lot of challenges. We’re going to try and accomplish big things and that’ll lead to wiping over and over again. We need candidates that are going to tough it out and make their sacrifices. They have to have the right attitude and personality to want to get better and to help their guild out. They need to be able to stick with it even when times are bad. What is your recommendation with what candidates should put in their application when applying to your guild? (Answered by Kree) Originality. The application has to stand out, just like a resume. If it’s too-safe or boring, it’s difficult to stand out from everyone else. Let your personality out in the application. Also, read the question completely! I asked a question about how people plan on utilizing dual spec and one of the responses I received was, “Maybe”. This doesn’t even make any sense! It shows that the person didn’t really read through the application. Check out the full interview ! ***SECURITY FOOTER*** :: Thanks for reading a post from World of Matticus ! “You miss 100% of the shots you never take.” – Wayne Gretzky Matt on Massively

Blood Pact: Warlock tips for Naxx-10 part 2

Filed under: Warlock , (Warlock) Blood Pact It ‘s time again for Blood Pact, your weekly Warlock column, detailing the dastardly deeds of Warcraft’s demonologists! Nick Whelan returns once again this week, to finish what he started. And this time, it’s personal! Last week , I wrote a column filled with tips for Naxx -10. Specifically, tips for Warlocks, because that’s who Blood Pact is written for. But my list ended up being so long that I was only able to write about the Spider and Plague wings of Naxx before the article started to feel a little bloated. So I chopped it in half, and now it’s time to conclude our tour of the dread citadel with the more difficult sections of the instance: the Construct, Military, and Frost wings! You Know You’re a WoW Addict When…

You know you’re a WoW addict when… the lore of Azeroth and its wide cast of characters follows you into slumber. I have had many a night, usually after an action-packed evening of playing until I can’t keep my eyes open any more, in which my main character continues her conquests in my mind, while my body is at rest. Unfortunately, usually when this happens, I can’t remember all my awesomeness when I wake up. I just have a feeling that whatever Locomom o was up to, she kicked some serious tail. But there are a couple of dreams, at least, of which I retained hazy bits and pieces. The first time I remember dreaming about WoW also was when I had a terrible cold. I stayed home from work, and made a couple feeble attempts at playing. Each time, the game made me feel dizzy and even worse. So I gave up on that idea. But apparently even trying to play left an impression on my medicated and sleepy mind. Maybe it was the cold medicine; maybe it was withdrawal from leveling. Either way, my head hit the pillow, and I was seeing my rogue in double vision. Patches of neon colors swirled around her as she stun-locked a random, made-up giant with a combination of ambush, gouge, backstab, gouge, eviscerate. She may have been controlled by an out-of-it mind, but she still knew how to put up a decent fight. My other, more recent dream memory is even less clear. But I think I fought a really powerful, undead frost dragon. And single-handedly tore him to shreds. Looking back, I hypothesize that the wyrm could have been Sapphiron , who now haunts those unfortunate enough to disturb his lair in Naxxramas . Now just how my level 71 rogue could have taken him out on her own? That is her secret that she will carry to the grave. Or maybe the Spirit Healer. The biggest downside – when I wake up, all the experience I could have gained from such an epic encounter is wiped. Something that awesome could have taken me way past the level 80 cap. Old school, I’d be all the way to level 99. If only. Yes, there are many tell-tale signs of a WoW addict. And every now and then, I’ll be detailing the symptoms here at Project Lore. So do you know someone who has been sleeping erratically or gurgling “ Arthas… ” while thrashing in his or her bed? Perhaps yourself, even? You know the cure: more WoW. Share

3.1 hitting this week? Wryxian drops some hints

Filed under: Patches , Odds and ends , Blizzard , News items , Forums EU Blue Wryxian is once again patrolling the forums, dropping hints that patch 3.1 ” is coming … soo … er … promptly .” Through crystal-ball gazing, the application of logic and, in some cases, sheer desperation, the general consensus has been that the Secrets of Ulduar patch will be dropping this week. Europe’s favourite Blue appeared on the forums this morning and left a carefully worded comment : “The patch is definitely coming … shortly. “The ‘severe lack of info’ might simply be because we announced it, gave further details about it, put it up on the PTR for testing and now we are basically on the verge of releasing it. “We certainly haven’t been quiet about it. It is coming. And it is coming … soo … er … promptly .” Regardless, we should know one way or another in less than twenty four hours. So cross your fingers (and toes) for some extended downtime tomorrow! 3.1 hitting this week? Wryxian drops some hints originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 14:00:00 EST.
